LAST SONG FROM KABUL is a short film that follows six Afghan female musicians as they adjust to life in Portugal after fleeing the Taliban in 2021. Under the Taliban, music is outlawed on pain of death. These young women are part of the Zohra Orchestra, the first all-female Afghan orchestra. It is part of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, formed by Dr Ahmad Sarmast in 2011. For these young women, music has been their freedom. Because they are part of the music school, they were able to escape the “Taliban prison” and seek a new life in Portugal, pursuing their education. The life of a refugee is complex, and they face lots of challenges trying to adapt, whilst their families remain in Afghanistan living in fear of the Taliban. This is a film about, music, freedom and the immense bravery of these young women in the face of an oppressive regime.
